The Backscenes
Quality Backscenes offers a number of different backscenes as standard, in a variety of formats involving size and medium as detailed below. Primarily produced for use on model railway layouts, they are equally suitable for diecast model or wargaming dioramas. Images of the full backscenes are presented below but The Gallery gives you the opportunity to examine them in much greater detail.The backscenes are printed on high-quality, 160-gsm roll paper, which allows them to be self-supporting or spray-mounted to a backboard, and are available as standard in a semi-matt finish. The backscenes are supplied with a 10 mm white border to the top and both ends and a 25 mm border to the bottom so that you can trim as required by your method of fixing. (We considered trimmming our backscenes before despatch but we thought you might want to slip the backscene down behind the layout or fold the top over a backscene board and therefore need a border, and so we have decided to offer the maximum flexibilty in this area and not trim.) All our backscenes are initially painted on a number of main boards together with a separate board, carefully produced so that it fits seamlessly both to the left and to the right of the central set. This central set is merged for printing and the backscenes below show in each case the central section together with the extra section, integrated into the backscene at both ends, so that you can see the extent of the available potential. (The images in the slideshow at the head of the page show the merged central sections but without the end sections.) In order to cater as much as possible for modellers' requirements in terms of scale and extent of display, the backscenes are available in a number of formats as indicated in the tables below. The original paintings were produced with a particular era and scale loosely in mind - so steam era GWR 'OO' gauge inspired the No. 1 Mining Village and the No. 2 Country Halt was produced specifically for Hornby 'O' gauge - but, in fact, all the backscenes are generally appropriate to layouts of a variety of gauges and scales.
All backscenes are mailed in stout, reusable tubes, which keep the contents secure during transit and which are ideal for safely storing the backscenes in the minimum space if you wish to use alternatives from time to time. And finally, don't forget that if our standard backscenes are not precisely what you want, we offer a 'tailoring' service, detailed under Other Services. This allows you to purchase backscenes, for example, with one or both end sections integrated with the central sections, or of exactly the right dimensions for your layout and hobbies room, on a special medium ... or as unique, bespoke items giving you the ultimate in modelling individuality! Our Standard Backscenes Backscene No. 1 - Mining Village This backscene is particularly suitable for use on prototypical steam and country diesel model railway layouts as well as for displaying diecast models.  Backscene No. 2 - Country Halt This backscene complements more naive displays and is particularly suitable in its larger forms for use on 'O' gauge tinplate model railway layouts. It was originally produced specifically for Hornby's pre- and post-war clockwork 'O' gauge series. It also works particularly well as a frieze in a child's bedroom or playroom!  Backscene No. 3 - Industrial Town This backscene is particularly suitable for use on prototypical late-steam and modern-era-diesel railway layouts and a wide variety of diecast model and wargame dioramas.  Backscene No. 4 - Thomas Country This backscene is particularly suitable as a background to Thomas the Tank Engine model railway layouts as well as static displays of Thomas models. In its largest size it also makes a wonderful frieze for a child's room.  Backscene No. 5 - Harbour View This backscene is ideal for a coastal railway layout for steam or diesel, either as a branchline to the port or as backdrop to a mainline layout to a bigger terminus down the coast. The backscenes are available in a variety of sizes as shown in the tables below. All backscenes are shipped in protective tubes (suitable also for storage) and our First Class Post or Courier P & P charges are as follows:
(Typically, we put the various parts of any scene and scale in the same container, so please let us know if you require something different, such as your entire order in one container or alternatively each item in its own container.) And please enquire about P & P costs for large multiples or for despatch outside the UK. There is no VAT payable on these backscenes.
